About

I’m Valentina Ferro, an artist, illustrator, physicist and science communicator. I believe there is a beauty in science that can only be truly communicated through art. I hope that my work can make this beauty accessible and manifest to everyone.

I make artwork that brings stories and ideas to life, from book illustrations to visual science communication. I use my knowledge of optics and history of science to craft immersive pieces that experiment with light, reflections, and surrealism. I’m currently exploring traditional painting alongside my ink work. I’m building a body of figurative paintings centered on portraits and the human figure.

I started my career as an artist in pen and ink, illustrating my own self-published book “Inking Science”. I continue to work in ink, mostly on etching-style illustrations with dark fantasy themes.

Artist Bio

Valentina Ferro is a physicist and artist based in the Pacific Northwest.

Born on the sunny coast of Sicily, she earned her BSc and MSc in physics in Italy before moving to Scotland in 2014 for a PhD in applied physics and biophysics. On rainy commutes she returned to an old love of drawing, and in 2018, while writing up her thesis, she self-published Inking Science, an illustrated book at the interface between science and art. She moved to Seattle in 2018 and now works as an applied scientist.

She spends her free time drawing — working in graphite and ink, currently exploring traditional painting, and illustrating her husband’s writing. She lives in Seattle with her husband, her son Leto, and her cat Po.
